Formula for Calculating Gua Number

For male, sum up the last two digits of the year of birth and add to a single digit. Then, subtract from 10. The resulting number (Ming Gua0 is 7. For example:

Male born in 1975

7  + 5 = 12

1  + 2 =  3

10 - 3 = 7

Female born in 1975

7 + 5 = 12

1 + 2 = 3

5 - 3 = 2

Note that if the resulting number is 5, change the Ming Gua to 2 for male and 8 for female. You may also use the Gua Number Reference Table, and then use the charts below to ascertain your positive and negative directions.

Eight Mansions Feng Shui is based on the Life Gua or Gua Number. A Gua Number is derived from one's date of birth. Based on one's personal Gua number, one can ascertain their best or worst directions. When BaZhai is appropriately applied, it can be the most effective method. There are two methods of Eight Mansions: Life Gua and House Gua.  A Life Gua is determined from the person's year of birth, whereas a House Gua is based on the sitting Gua of a house. There are basically two halves: East Group and West Group.

Each person is assigned one of the 8 Ming Gua based on their year of birth. Of the 8 Ming Gua, 4 belongs to the East Life Group and 4 to the West Life Group.

The Right House for You

To enhance luck in general, the main door of your home should face one of (preferrably your Sheng Qi direction) your auspicious directions (Ming Gua). To measure the facing direction of your home, you need to find the most "Yang" side of the property (e.g., the main road, the side that receives the most light or the side with the most windows or doors. Do the following to ascertain the location of your main door:

1. Using a sketch or the floor plan of your house, draw the 9 grids as illustrated below.

2. Using a compass, stand in the center of your house and establish the North direction and mark it. Then, identify all the other directions according to the directions of the compass.

3. Using the simple 9 Grids, you will be able to identify the favorable and unfavorable sectors in your home based on either your Bazhai or Flying Stars.

Positioning Yourself

The master bedroom is one of the three (front door and kitchen) most important factors in internal Feng Shui; therefore, you must choose a room located in one of your four auspicious locations. For instance, for a person that belongs to the East Group, a house facing North is ideal. The master bedroom should be located in the E, SE, N, and S. You can do this by taking the floor plan of your home and to identify the sectors of your home. In addition to location, the height of the ceiling should be a minimum of 8 feet. Always choose a leveled ceiling. A slanted ceiling causes the Qi in the room to be imbalanced. If your celing is slanted, move the bed so that you sleep where your head lies on the bed at the higher end of the ceiling and not the lower one.

Your Bedroom

In addition to the location of your room, there are a few things your bedroom should and shouldn't have. First, the height of the ceiling should be a minimum of 8 feet. Always choose a leveled ceiling. A slanted ceiling causes the Qi in the room to be imbalanced. If your celing is slanted, move the bed so that you sleep where your head lies on the bed at the higher end of the ceiling and not the lower one. There shouldn't be any protruding light fixtures or cieling fans. Place side tables on both sides of the bed and make sure there's no beam directly above you. When in bed, make sure that the bed is not aligned with the door and make sure you have good support by placing the headboard against a wall.
